    Youth & HIV/AIDS

In the United States, half of all new HIV infections occur among people under the age of 25, and one-quarter of new infections occur among people between the ages of 13 and 21, according to CDC. That means that an average of two young people are infected with HIV every hour of every day. Without forceful and focused action, these already troubling trends may worsen.

Youth & HIV/AIDS: An American Agenda, a Report to the President was prepared by the Office of National AIDS Policy and announced at a press conference on March 5. The report is intended to serve as a catalyst to change the way Americans view the threat of HIV and AIDS to the next generation. View the report on the CDC NAC web site or gopher site or order a FREE copy using the Internet Order Form.

HIV/AIDS and Adolescents: A Guide to Selected Resources provides access to information relevant to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and adolescents, drawn from the Clearinghouse's Resources and Services, Educational Materials, Funding, and Periodicals databases. Please note: there is a $4 shipping & handling fee for this guide; call 1-800-458-5231 to order a print copy, or view the full text on the CDC NAC Gopher.

CDC Business and Labor Resource Service

While waiting for your luggage in a busy airport, flipping through a business magazine, or watching television, you may have seen part of a recent advertising campaign for the CDC Business and Labor Respond to AIDS Program.

The Program has recently received extensive promotion through airport dioramas, print advertisements, and a television public service announcement. The five components of the Business and Labor Respond to AIDS Program are workplace policy, employee education, manager/supervisor education, family education, and community volunteerism. To assist businesses and organizations with implement-ing these components, CDC developed the Manager's Kit and Labor Leader's Kit.

The Manager's Kit is a comprehensive guide to assist you in addressing HIV/AIDS in your organization. It includes sections on developing workplace policies, providing information for employees, and identifying additional resources. All of the materials in the kit are designed for employers, supervisors, and human re-sources staff. Some materials in the kit can be used for program development and planning while others are sample or ready-to-use employee education materials.

The Manager's Kit is available from the Business and Labor Resource Service (BLRS). The Service, operated by the Clearinghouse, links businesses, labor, and federal agencies with resources that provide assistance in developing workplace-based HIV/AIDS policies and education programs. The kits cost $25 each; call 1-800-458-5231 to order a copy. If you have questions about workplace-related HIV/AIDS issues, call BLRS at 1-800-458-5231.

    HIV Prevention Community Planning

In support of HIV Prevention Community Planning, the Clearinghouse recently published HIV Prevention Community Planning Process: Linking Groups with Proven Technical Resources. This Standard Search lists information on more than 100 materials included in the Educational Materials Database. You can use materials in this search as background information during the community planning process and to find out about model programs and networking links with other organizations. To order a free copy, use the CDC NAC Internet Order Form or download the text from the CDC NAC FTP site.
