About Portable Document Format (PDF)

NPIN publications are available in Portable Document Format (PDF) for both viewing and printing. PDF preserves the original format of the documents, and all you need to view them is Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can download for free from the Adobe Systems Web site. Simple instructions are included in the download to help you install Reader.

After installing Acrobat Reader on your hard drive, you may need to configure your browser to view PDF files. After you configure your browser, Acrobat Reader will launch automatically when you click on (PDF) next to the title of a publication.

If you want to download the PDF files, view them in Acrobat Reader, click on File | Save As, and save them on your hard drive. Or, under Windows, right-click on PDF and choose Save link as.

If you have problems viewing the PDF documents in Acrobat Reader, go to the Acrobat Top Issues page of Adobe customer support.

If you are having problems configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to this Adobe IE support page. If IE gives you error messages when you try to view PDF files, go to another Adobe IE support page.

Netscape 4.0 on the PC: Return to top

  1. Click on Edit | Preferences.
  2. In the Category field, click on Navigator | Applications. (You may have to double-click on Navigator, or click on the + next to it, to view the Navigator subcategories.)
  3. In the Description pick list, scroll down and click on Portable Document Format, then click on Edit.
  4. Click on Browse, and locate the Acrobat Reader exe file on your computer.
  5. In the Edit Type dialog box, click on the Application radio button in the Handled By field.
  6. If Portable Document Format does not appear in the Description pick list, click on New. Enter the following information: Description: "Acrobat", MIME Type: "application/pdf", Suffixes: "pdf". In the Application To Use field, click on Browse and browse to the Acrobat Reader exe file on your computer.
  7. Click on OK twice to save your changes.

  1. Click on Options | General Preferences.
  2. Click on Helpers.
  3. Highlight application/pdf (extension pdf), click on Launch the Application, and locate the Acrobat Reader exe file on your computer.
  4. Click on Open.
  5. If Portable Document Format does not appear in the Description pick list, click on New. Enter the following information: Description: "Acrobat", MIME Type: "application/pdf", Suffixes: "pdf". Then follow step 3.
  6. Click on OK.

Netscape 4.0 on the Mac Return to top

  1. Click on Edit | Preferences.
  2. Click on the arrow next to Navigator until you see Applications; click on Applications.
  3. Click on the Application radio button. Then click on Choose, and browse to the Acrobat Reader file on your hard drive.
  4. Click on Open, then scroll down the Find Type Menu and highlight PDF. In the Suffixes window, type "pdf".
  5. If Acrobat is already listed, but does not launch when you try to view PDF files, the information may need to be updated. If so, follow the procedures in step 4.

Netscape 3.0 on the Mac Return to top

  1. Click on Apple | Options.
  2. Click on the Helpers tab.
  3. Click on the Applications radio button.
  4. Click on Browse and locate the Acrobat Reader file on your hard drive.
  5. Click on OK.
  6. If Acrobat is already listed, but does not launch when you try to view PDF files, the information may need to be updated. If so, follow the procedures in step 3.

Internet Explorer 4.0: Return to top

Internet Explorer 4.0 (IE 4) has built-in application helpers, one of which is Adobe Acrobat Reader for PDF files, so you should not have to configure your browser to use Reader for PDF files.

To view PDF files with IE 4, you will need the latest ActiveX Control for Adobe Acrobat in addition to Acrobat Reader. Download the Windows version now.

Also, if Content Advisor is turned enabled in IE 4, you cannot view PDF files in the browser. To disable Content Advisor: Click on View | Internet Options | Content. In the Content Advisor field, click on Disable if it appears. Enter the password at the prompt, and click on OK until the Internet Options window closes. If an Enable button appears instead of Disable, then Content Advisor is not turned on.

Note: Microsoft Internet Explorer documentation acknowledges incompatibilities between IE and Reader. Using the Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 with Internet Explorer 4.0 may not work.

Explorer has built-in viewers for certain types of files, one of which is Adobe Acrobat Reader for PDF files, so you should not have to configure your browser to use Reader for PDF files. However, if Reader does not launch when you try to view a PDF file, try these steps:

  1. Click on View | Options.
  2. Click on the Programs tab.
  3. In the Viewers field, click on the File Types button.
  4. Scroll down the document type list until you see Adobe Acrobat Document, and click on it.
  5. Click on Edit.
  6. The following information should be entered. If it is not, enter it.
    • MIME type: application/pdf
    • description: adobe acrobat file
    • suffixes: pdf
    • application: acrobat
  7. Click on OK three times to return to the main browser window.
