What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small bits of information sent to your computer via the Internet and stored on your hard drive. Typically, this information includes the address of the server from which it originated (e.g., www.cdcnpin.org), and the cookie's expiration date and time. Frequently an identification number is sent, which allows the server to recognize you. For more detailed information, see Cookie Central.
How Are Cookies Used?
Generally, cookies are used by Web sites to record what pages you have visited or what you have done on the site (e.g., ordered a book or taken a survey), or to store your preferences (e.g., so the site can be customized for you on return visits, based on what you looked at before).
How Will NPIN's Cookie Be Used?
The NPIN cookie is sent to your computer when you search publications (i.e., click on topic icons on either the Publications start page or the Browse by Topic start page). It will be used in one or, if you choose, two ways.
- It contains an identification number used in NPIN's database to keep track of the items in your shopping cart. Your name and other personal information are not part of this identification number.
- If you click on Remember me (on the order form screen), your name and address and other necessary mailing information that you enter into the form will be stored in NPIN's database. If you do not click on Remember Me, this information will not be stored. Note: If you click on Remember me, but decide on a return visit you no longer want your personal information remembered, you can click on the checkbox next to Remember me to deselect it. Your personal information will no longer be remembered by the system. Note: If you did not accept the NPIN cookie, the Remember me option will still appear on your screen, but will not function.
The NPIN cookie expires on 01/01/03. However, reinstalling your browser software will erase it. If your cookie gets deleted or overwritten, you will be reassigned one when you return to the site.
Can You Control Cookies on Your Computer?
Yes. You do not have to accept any cookies, if you do not want them. However, if you reject the NPIN cookie, your publications browsing and ordering abilities will be limited.
