Use this field to search for any word, phrase, numerical sequence or abbreviation anywhere in the entire database. If you are not sure where a certain word or phrase might appear, enter it in this field.

Use this field to find summaries with particular words in the title.

Example: To find summaries with the word "tuberculosis" in the title, enter the following:

Use this field to find all summaries from a particular source. Sources include newspapers, newswires, medical journals, and other periodicals.

Use this field to find particular terms in the abstract.

Example: To find summaries that mention AIDS Action Committee in the abstract, enter the following:

Descriptors Return to top

Use this field to find summaries that list a particular descriptor. Descriptors come from CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse's Educational Materials Database Thesaurus. Please note that summaries issued before May 20, 1994, do not have descriptors. When you search using descriptors you are able to take advantage of the effort that a CDC NAC staff member has already made in selecting words that reflect the content of the summary.

Example 1: To find summaries with the descriptor "public awareness campaigns," enter the following:

Enter a word in the descriptor field to find out if that word is being used by the database as a descriptor. If it is, you will be able to retrieve records. If it is not, your retrieval will be zero.

Example 2: To find summaries with the word "funding" in the Descriptor field, enter the following:

Use this field to find summaries written between particular dates. The dates range from May 1988 to the present. (A few summaries go back to 1982.) Use the MM/DD/YYYY format when entering the date.

There are two display options that control the format and the number of results displayed on your screen. These options are found on the bottom of the CDC NCHSTP Prevention News Update Database page.

Select Display Format

  1. List of matching abstracts.
    This option will display a list of presentation titles on your screen. To view the full record, click on the highlighted title.
  2. Complete information about matching abstracts.
    This option will display all the results in full format to your screen.

Maximum Number of Abstracts to Display

To change the number of abstracts to display, click in the number box, delete the current number, and enter a new one.
